We have certainly had considerable good fortune with our bookings so far this year and Energy Bank, our hosts last week in Manitowoc added to our string of successful meetings. It was an excellent and informative meeting featuring a team from Panasonic and Neal Verfuerth, the founder of Orion Lighting. On its own that would be an incredibly successful career for almost anyone. However, it didn’t end there for Neal who went on to become a globally recognized leader in lighting technology, controls and now the founder and CEO of Energy Bank.
The meeting began with a presentation by the Panasonic team covering the evolution of Bluetooth technology, from inception, through Bluetooth Low Energy, IP connectivity, security, cloud connectivity to Smart Mesh. The objective it seemed was to get to the point where the presentation could continue with a discussion of, IoT the “Internet of Things”.
It was at that point Neal took over to discuss how lighting, with each fixture placed to provide full coverage with light, is ideally suited for extending a wireless network. With power to each fixture it wasn’t much of a reach to consider intelligent devices linked together on an intelligent wireless network capable of data acquisition from a variety of sources. Data that could be used not only for the obvious, lighting management, but other processes supporting intelligent operations as well.
Neal morphed that discussion to Energy Bank’s marquis product “Fusion”. Fusion is lighting technology that uses DC power supplied directly from photovoltaic solar panels. No power is wasted in the conversion from DC to AC making the lighting exceptionally efficient. The light output is managed by “Genius IoT” which connected the earlier presentation on Bluetooth and the Internet of Things making for a pretty smooth segue. All in all, the concept seemed to be simple enough to make one wonder, “why didn’t I think of that” Damn!
There was more, a lot more but you know what they say “You had to be there”.
